One of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year is upon us! Or maybe not that eagerly anticipated… but it’s still an event. And everyone’s invited to take part! Afònics Anònims is neither a concert, nor a singing competition, nor karaoke, but it borrows elements from all three to offer a fun, irreverent experience for all ages.
Creators of La Cora, the community choir of La Caldera, Mar Garcia and Javi Soler combine their respective backgrounds in dance and music with a genuine fascination for pop culture aesthetics and the visual language of the internet. Fame is one of the myths that social media has most widely amplified, exaggerating it to the point that it often tips into self-parody. The same system that glorifies pop stars also voraciously devours home videos of people singing in the shower or dancing in shop windows.
You don’t need to be a pop star to grab a mike and have a good time. That’s the premise Mar and Javi embrace in this public vocal exercise, which culminates in a series of covers of well-known songs that will be twisted and vandalised by the impromptu choir gathered in Plaça Didó to sing, dance and scream their lungs out. No inhibitions, just plenty of laughter.
Karaoke is the natural evolution of Mar and Javi’s choreographic and choral work, rooted in their interest in the interplay between sound and movement. Karaoke as a welcoming, democratic format, where the most important thing is not to perform well, but to enjoy the moment, and to respect everyone else’s joy too. More than anything, this is about having fun together, letting go in unison, and making voice and body feel lighter. In the same square, the Tronco concert will lighten the load of that strange thing called living. No solemnity allowed!
