EL DISCURSO

ROSA ROMERO

About the project:

Rosa Romero is interested in this project through discourse as thought and ideology, but also as a set of statements. These two meanings often converge in the performing arts.

Discourse, discourse, discourse. The temptation to generate a more accessible discourse haunts the creator, yet she is caught by an intimate conviction about the need to search for other ways of speaking. Moving away from hegemony makes her feel useful. Someone will have to try, to throw themselves into the mud, put on overalls, and attempt to walk backwards.

At its core, this project is an essay in voice: a way of finding and affirming one’s own modes within the contemporary stage, or of plunging off a cliff.

About the creator:

An actress and creator from Cádiz, she holds a degree in Dramatic Arts from the ESAD of Málaga. In this city, she worked with young companies such as Bajotierra and La Mordiente. In 2014, she began her path toward personal creation, focusing on the body, the recovery of inherited dance, and raw communication with the audience. In 2018, she premiered her first solo piece, Esta no es la vida privada de Rosa Romero. In 2020, she was selected as a resident artist at La Caldera (Barcelona) with the piece DEBUT, which premiered in January 2021. Soy un baile premiered in September 2023 and received the awards for Best Performer and Best Breakthrough Show 2023 from the Andalusian Association of Dance Professionals. She currently resides in Seville, where she has participated in projects such as Pelo de trol with Silvia Balvín, and Estación espacial with Alberto Cortés and Álex Peña, produced by Teatro de la Abadía as part of the Teatro confinado cycle (2020). La escuela del sur is one of her most recent projects, created and directed together with Alberto Cortés, in collaboration with the FIT and the Siemens Foundation: a meeting space for contemporary performing artists from the province of Cádiz.
