About the project:

She Spells Sea Shells on the Shea Sore is a choreographic and vocal solo performed by Júlia Rúbies Subirós that stems from an intimate experience: what happens when what we perceive and express is dismissed by others and turned into exaggeration, instability or hysteria?

Faced with the impossibility of being heard, the piece shifts its investigation towards the body and the voice, and particularly towards the scream. Through figures such as Echo, Cassandra, Medusa, Ophelia and the sirens, drawn from Western mythology, literature and history, the project explores how the feminised voice has been constructed, restricted and pathologised over time.

All these figures pass through a single performer, who becomes a space where different voices, memories and inheritances meet.

About the creator:

Brussels-based performer, choreographer and researcher, Júlia Rúbies Subirós develops a practice situated between dance and voice, and between the stage, exhibition spaces and research contexts. She graduated from P.A.R.T.S. in 2019 and was a recipient of the DanceWEB scholarship at ImPulsTanz (2020–2021). As a performer, she has collaborated with artists including Mette Ingvartsen, Marco D’Agostin, Georgia Vardarou, Alix Eynaudi, Ian Kaler and Michiel Vandevelde, touring extensively across Europe and the United States, and was a member of Parasol I at Tanzquartier Wien.

Alongside her work as a performer, she develops her own projects, including SHE SPELLS SEA SHELLS ON THE SHEA SORE, currently in progress. Her practice also extends to dramaturgy, artistic support and collective research. She is co-founder of Accompany Class, a self-organised training space for movement artists in Brussels, and Cascades, an intergenerational research project on artistic memory within the independent scene, presented at Mercat de les Flors as part of the Sâlmon Festival.
